Parish History
Until 1963, the three Episcopal
churches in Columbus were Trinity, located in the downtown business
district; St. Christopher, also in downtown Columbus; and St. Thomas in
Central Columbus. There was no Episcopal Church conveniently located to
serve the population of South Columbus or the soldiers and families of
the nearby Fort Benning Military Reservation.
In early 1964, the
Rev. M. Dewey Gable, rectorof St. Thomas, appointed a committee from
St. Thomas' Vestry to oversee plans for a small temporary church
building on St. Mary's Road. In the Spring of 1964, building
construction began and the first official service was held. In
September that same year, 22 members petitioned to be admitted to the
Diocese of Atlanta as an organized mission under the name of St. Mary
Magdalene. In January 1965, St. Mary Magdalene was admitted as an
official mission (and later designated an aided parish) in the Diocese.
The present church building is located at 4244 St. Mary's Road. As a
part of the Diocese of Atlanta, we are one of the parishes which make
up its Chattahoochee Valley Convocation.
